Cryptocurrency exchange Gemini announced on Wednesday, Oct. 10, that it is hiring former options exchange COO Jeanine Hightower-Sellitto as managing director. Sources familiar to the matter suggest that her role will be to build certain institutional business lines for the company. She will also be engaged in the rehash of the exchange’s customer support.
Hightower-Sellitto Could Shake Up GeminiThe cryptocurrency exchange has hired Hightower-Sellitto to change things, especially when it comes to customer support. The announcement follows Coinbase’s decision to bring Jonathan Kellner from institutional brokerage Instinet to their team.
Hightower-Sellitto’s appointment is important to the exchange as she can bring her Wall Street experience to the company. She was formerly the chief operating officer of options marketplace International Securities Exchange, which was acquired by Nasdaq in 2016. She joined the International Securities Exchange as a relationship manager in 2004 but will be acting as a managing director covering operations at Gemini. Her responsibilities will include handling the firm’s business lines. One of her primary focus areas will be bringing more institutional customers to Gemini.
She will also oversee the development of client-specific customer service teams that will assist asset managers and hedge funds better. Currently, customer service reps manage a wide range of clients, right from retail brokerages to hedge funds.
Does Gemini Want to Grow Bigger?Gemini, a regulated crypto exchange from New York, commands less than 1 percent of the crypto trading market, per CoinMarketCap data. However, the Winklevoss-twin-operated exchange has remained very cautious in navigating the tough regulatory times. With 2018 began a phase of expansion and new ambitions for the exchange.
First, it launched Bitcoin futures, along with Cboe Global Markets. Later, it went on to send applications for launching crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs) to the Securities and Exchange Commission twice. Also, the exchange recently launched its Gemini Dollar stablecoin, which is pegged to the US dollar, and is partnering with Omniex to help attract institutional investors to its platform.
Gemini has excelled in innovation before too. For instance, it became the first exchange to offer large block trades for institutional clients and offered colocation facility for high-frequency trading firms as well.
