Ross Ulbricht's Freedom Still Being Fought For By Freeross.org

A new petition has recently been launched by activists allied to the Free Ross organization in an attempt to have the darknet web creator released. The supporters, family, and legal team of Ross Ulbricht have not given up hope and continue to fight for the release of the Darknet Market website creator.

The Petition

Ross is facing life in prison for being the creator and operator of the now infamous Darknet Market website. On July 14th this year, activists known to work with the Free Ross Organization started another online petition with the aim of defending of Ross’s freedom.

This particular petition was published on the change.org website. The activities behind the petition are seeking mercy for the thirty-four-year-old Ross, who happens to be a graduate of Pennsylvania State University.

In the petition, the activists have requested the US President, Donald Trump to pardon Ross, and grant him amnesty. Within three days, the petition has been able to garner close to six thousand supporters.

History Of The DarkNet Website

Ross Ulbricht created the now popular DarkNet website Silk Road in 2011. The website was not regulated in any way, and it acted as an e-commerce platform that could be used by people to purchase a wide array of goods.

People using the platform used Bitcoins to purchase goods, as well as pay for any services that they needed. Some of the goods being traded on the platform were illegal, with some transactions involving the sale and purchase of drugs.

According to the petition, the drugs purchased through the platform were in small quantities, and they mainly involved cannabis. The website was based on the Tor browser, and it placed a lot of priority on the anonymity of its users.

Ulbricht explained that his main goal was to protect the privacy and anonymity of the people using the website. In creating the website, he was motivated by the ideas of free markets and freedom.

But unluckily, those working in the law enforcement sector did not share similar ideas as Ross. He was subsequently arrested in 2013 and sentenced two years later in 2015. He was sentenced to life in prison without a possibility of being paroled.

His sentencing was as a result of developing and operating Silk Road. His conviction was based on a number of offenses top among them being drug trafficking and money laundering.

Judge Katherine Forrest, the convicting judge went on the record to emphasize that she wanted to make the Ross case an example that would be used to deter other people from committing such crimes in the future. As a result, she went ahead to prescribe the most severe punishment for Mr. Ross for his offenses.

Further information included in the petition, including information provided by his mother alleges that the case against Ross was rigged from the start and that he was not accorded a fair trial.

The petition further goes to state that the verdict read by the judge was too harsh for a person who did not have any criminal past.
