The new non-fungible token (NFT) collection commemorates the iconic singer on the anniversary of his 75th birthday.
Four digital collectible artworks influenced by the late Freddie Mercury are soon up for auction. The auction comes on what would have been the singer’s 75th birthday.
The collectibles contain artwork by Blake Kathryn, Chad Knight, Mat Maitland, and MBSJQ. Digital art marketplace SuperRare is the host for the timed auction. Organizers said it goes live on September 20th and lasts for 75 hours.
Moreover, the proceeds of the auction will go towards the Mercury Phoenix Trust – an AIDS charity. Queen band members Brian May and Roger Taylor, along with band manager Jim Beach founded the organization in memory of the singer.
The NFTs in the collection contain three with depictions of the singer himself. The fourth is of a white grand piano with a crown on the stool, surrounded by a pond of goldfish.
In a joint statement, both SupeRare and the charity related the project to Mercury’s creativity. “Freddie Mercury left a very simple creative brief to the world on his passing. ‘You can do whatever you want with my work, just never make me boring’.”
NFT CommemorationsOver the last year, the NFT market skyrocketed in popularity and activity. These digital collectibles took over major mainstream industries and a digital metaverse came into view. Some, like the co-founder of Tether, believe that “every consumer product will have an NFT” in the future.
Just like the Freddie Mercury NFT the space has other examples of this technology used both for commemorative and charity purposes.
The immensely popular digital artist Beeple sold an NFT for $6 million, which gave proceeds to OpenEarth Foundation. Sports star Pele also sold NFTs as digital trading cards and gave the funds to his charity.
In addition, NFTs provide an opportunity for a digital capsule or commemoration of something or even someone. Recently an NFT collection by Russel Simmons and Snoop Dogg commemorated pioneers of the hip hop music industry. The Masterminds of Hip Hop contained never-before-seen artwork and music from industry legends.
It’s not just in the music industry, commemorative NFTs have a place. In August, unreleased photos of Kobe Bryant became NFTs up for auction. The photos were of Bryant as a young 18-year-old basketballer.
