Facebook Unveils More Compact, Standalone and Enhanced Oculus Quest 2 Virtual Reality Headset
On Wednesday, September 16, Facebook Inc (NASDAQ: FB) unveiled its latest VR headset offering, the Oculus Quest 2. Unlike its last year’s version, the Quest 2 successor is ergonomically compact, more powerful and completely standalone. Meaning it doesn’t require an additional computing power to run. Everything essential comes with the VR bundle itself.
Well, it is clear that Facebook is moving away from its old-generation computer-based Oculus Rift headsets. After all, who doesn’t want a more flexible VR play rather than messing up with those dangling cords.
Of course, this has to come with an uncompromised gaming experience. The Oculus Quest 2 can run all advanced PC VR games compatible with the Rift just by using the Oculus Link USB-C cable. Previously in beta, Facebook has now made the Oculus Link an official feature of its VR family.
With the government lockdown initiated by the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic, more people stayed in-home as the demand for gaming jumped significantly. Simultaneously, the demand for Quest has been on a rise and Facebook has been having a time keeping them in stock. Facebook has already ramped up production for its Oculus Quest 2 citing a huge demand.

The Oculus quest 2 is lighter than its predecessor and features a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Platform processor and 6GB of memory for immersive-rich experiences.
The newly designed controllers have better ergonomics and longer better life. The Oculus Quest 2 also comes at an attractive price point starting at just $299. Facebook has already started accepting pre-order with shipment expected to start on October 13.
Another major development is Facebook signing a multi-year partnership with popular eyewear maker EssilorLuxxotica. Facebook will work with Essilor to make Ray-Ban branded smart glasses and bring them to the market by early 2021. These smart glasses will come with a mix of fashion and innovative technology to connect on-the-go with friends and family.
Facebook also announced that it will bring new games to Oculus from some well-known franchises. This includes some of the popular titles like Jurassic World Aftermath, Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge, and The Climb 2. Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell VR titles are also on the list.
Despite the announcement, the FB stock tanked 3.2% closing at $263.52 on Wednesday.
