As expected, the recently held Devcon4 conference involved elite minds from the cryptocurrency sector and discussed how to develop a multipolar decentralized ecosystem. The event ran from October 30 to November 2 in Prague, the capital city of the Czech Republic.
Serenity Scaling SolutionThe main items on the agenda were the Ethereum network’s three scaling solutions, namely Casper, Plasma and sharding. Often, Casper and sharding solutions have been deployed concurrently to improve scalability on the Ethereum blockchain. As a result, the combo of these two techniques is referred to as ‘shasper’.
During Devcon4, Vitalik Buterin, a co-founder of Ethereum, proposed that shasper should be called Serenity. Moving on, Buterin stated that Serenity would improve scalability by at least 1,000 times. Other notable features included in the Serenity solution include an improved version of the Ethereum Virtual Machine called eWASM and a pure Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism.
Crypto Community AttendeesDespite the agenda being dominated by Ethereum issues, Devcon4 attracted the interest of other members of the crypto community. In this regard, Amaury Sechet, the leader of Bitcoin ABC, tweeted other projects attended the meeting because it would contribute to the development of the crypto sector. Also, the Zcash community was represented by its co-founder, Zooko Wilcox. Wilcox talked on the Sapling update that is expected to improve the privacy and efficiency of Zcash transactions.
Improvements On The Ethereum NetworkBecause it was centered on Ethereum, the Eth development team made announcements regarding the technical functionalities that will be soon implemented on the Ethereum network. These include:
Vyper updates – vyper is the new Ethereum smart contract programming language. Ethermint – a platform for scaling Layer 1 decentralized applications. iOS development kit for deploying Ethereum smart contracts on Apple devices. Yul – a mechanism for minimizing gas fees in the implementation of smart contracts. ‘Decentralization Against Isolation’On the final day of Devocn4, Glen Weyl, the chief researcher at Microsoft Research New York City, issued a keynote speech titled ‘decentralization against isolation.’ Weyl said that embracing collective action through several communities is the best way to protect decentralization against governments and monopolistic companies
