Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has slammed those cryptocurrency marketplaces that are enabling a fake “Fortnite token” promotion.
He also noted that the company’s lawyers were looking into the Twitter accounts that have promoted the scam Fortnite cryptocurrencies.
“There isn’t a Fortnite cryptocurrency,” the Epic Games co-founder stated in a tweet on Monday. He added:
The Twitter accounts promoting such a thing are a scam. Epic’s lawyers are on it. Also, shame on the cryptocurrency marketplaces that enable this kind of thing.”

— Tim Sweeney (@TimSweeneyEpic) June 6, 2022While one of the Twitter accounts tried to justify their use of Fortnite in their project, Sweeney noted copyright and trademark laws clearly prohibit such unauthorized usage.
That’s not how trademarks and copyrights work though. You can’t use the Fortnite name and images without permission to market an unrelated product.
— Tim Sweeney (@TimSweeneyEpic) June 6, 2022Notably, Sweeny did not mention any specific exchanges and marketplaces, although some popular decentralized exchanges have reportedly allowed trading of the “Fortnite Token (FNT).”
Despite his misgivings about the scams, Sweeney is not dismissive of blockchain and crypto. In fact, he noted that whenever a new technology emerges, there are those that will always try to put into negative use.
According to him, it would be wrong to look at the whole sector in such light.
When new technology emerges, some put it to good use, and others put it to bad use. It would be terribly shortsighted to ban an entire field of technology for such a reason.”
Fortnite was released in 2017 and remains the most popular battle royale game. It clocked more than 125 million downloads within a year of its launch and reached more than 350 million registered users across the world in May 2020.
