EOS, the fifth largest cryptocurrency and one of the most promising blockchain projects in the world, organized the EOS Global Hackathon event in London. Held at the premises of the London Science Museum, it was one of the biggest hackathon events in the city to date. It focused on creating solutions that could help in protecting the privacy of users. A total of $144,000 was distributed in prizes by the EOS venture capital arm.
Focus on User Privacy Takes Over the HackathonBlock.one, EOS publisher, focused on solving real-world problems related to privacy and data security through the event. The theme of the hackathon was to “[c]reate an application on the EOSIO platform that improves the relationship between technology and a user’s privacy or security.”
A total of 468 participants from 44 countries arrived for the hackathon, making it one of the biggest events for Block.one. The participants, divided into 90 teams, spent 26 hours programming their solutions before pitching their ideas.
A panel of judges selected the winners, which include Block.one cofounders Brendan Blumer and Dan Larimer. Speaking about the theme of the event, Larimer said:
“Hacking and data leaks cost organizations and individuals billions of dollars every year.”
He also noted that blockchain technology offers users a way to connect securely with the world and has enormous potential for protecting user data. He further said that it is the right time to explore workable solutions that enable mass adoption of blockchains the easy way.
Who All Won at the Hackathon? The top prize of $100,000 was awarded to EOShield. The UK-based duo James Pavur and Casey Knerr designed an application that protects users from malware through a blockchain-based delisting and verification process. Knerr said that they believe strongly in the idea of smart contracts.
The second prize of $25,000 was given to Chestnut. The project was created with the aim of helping protect funds from cybercriminals via a smart bank account. It also won the prize for Best User Experience, adding another $3,000 to its winnings.
The third prize of $10,000 was given to On the Block, a credit-checking app that removes third parties and simplifies the credit-check process.
GeneOS won the Best Social Impact Prize with $3,000 in prize money. The project allows users to donate genomics data in an anonymous and secure way to help researchers look better into Alzheimer’s disease.
