The first pay-TV service to add Bitcoin as a payment method back in 2014 is now adding Bitcoin Cash as a payment option for its subscribers. The company has partnered with BitPay to process these payments for both Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash transactions. BitPay is the largest global blockchain payment provider.
Why Bitcoin Cash? The company had a plethora of digital currencies to choose from, but they chose to go with Bitcoin Cash. This could be because adding support for Bitcoin hard fork is much easier than adding a completely different currency like EOS or Ethereum.
Taking about the new addition, DISH executive vice president and COO John Swieringa said:
“We’ve added Bitcoin Cash just as we chose to accept Bitcoin to serve customers who have adopted a new way of doing business. We have a steady volume of customers paying with cryptocurrency each month, and BitPay will allow us to continue offering more choice and convenience to our customers.”
As one of the Fortune 250 companies, DISH commands power in the connectivity sector. The company has already started working on a national narrowband Internet-of-Things network that will use its available spectrum portfolio to improve connectivity in the country further.
Migrating to BitpayDISH will also migrate to BitPay for its Bitcoin payments. Customers will now be able to pay for their monthly TV subscriptions using either Bitcoin or Bitcoin Cash. The payment will also be valid for events and pay-per-view events. Customers will make a push transaction in the currency of their choice. This one-time payment can be made on DISH Hopper DVR or mydish.com. To mitiagte the crypto price volatility risks, BitPay will exchange the crypto payments to US Dollars, right at the moment of the transaction.
Sonny Singh, the chief commercial officer at BitPay, talks about their goal:
“Our goal for DISH Network is a seamless transition to BitPay, so all customers who are currently paying for services with Bitcoin continue to have the option to pay with Bitcoin or Bitcoin Cash. Cryptocurrency is an increasingly popular way for consumers to make purchases online as it reduces credit card fraud and is cheaper for the merchants.”
BitPay, founded in 2011, is one of the most well-known companies in the field of crypto payments and operates a BitPay Visa Prepaid Card as well.
