Cryptocurrency mining scripts such as Coinhive can be blocked on Mozilla Firefox

Mozilla Firefox has always been at the forefront of protecting its users from cryptocurrency mining scripts. Last year, the open-source web browser released a statement assuring its users that it would block mining scripts in its upcoming version. Staying true to its word, the leading browsing platform released a statement titled ‘Protecting Against Fingerprinting and Cryptocurrency Mining Available in Firefox Nightly and Beta’, on 9th April 2019.

The statement read,

“At Mozilla, we have been working hard to protect you from threats and annoyances on the web, so you can live your online life with less to worry about. Last year, we told you about adapting our approach to anti-tracking given the added importance of keeping people’s information on the web private in today’s climate.”

The blog post further stated that, in their previous statement, one of the key factors they had claimed to work towards was mitigating harmful practices, including cryptocurrency mining and fingerprinting. With an aim to fulfill the same, the team stated that they have released a new feature that blocks both these harmful practices.

Firefox’s statement on cryptominers,

“[…] ‘cryptominers’ run costly operations on your web browser without your knowledge or consent, using the power of your computer’s CPU to generate cryptocurrency for someone else’s benefit. These scrips slow down your computer, drain your battery and rack up your electricity bill.”

This was followed by the Firefox team stating that they have listed domains that are popular for running cryptomining scripts by collaborating with Disconnect.me, a platform that allows users to block invisible sites that track user’s search and browsing history. Some of the cryptomining scripts that can now be blocked on Firefox include, CashBeet, aster18cdn, CoinHive, CoinPot, CryptoLoot, CryptoWebMiner, Freemine, Gridcash, and MinerAlt.

The blog stated,

“Now in the latest Firefox Nightly and Beta versions, we give users the option to block both kinds of scripts as part of our Content Blocking suite of protections. In Firefox Nightly 68 and Beta 67, these new protections against fingerprinting and cryptomining are currently disabled by default”
