You walk into the smallish (seats 600) late-19th century Victoria Theatre in humid, November Singapore. Find an empty spot among the plush maroon seats that slope downwards to the stage.
Two seated figures — both in Guy Fawkes masks, seemingly wearing capes — are projected onto a white screen, only their shadows visible. Their voices are distorted, a layered robot echo.
Sunny King, perhaps most known for being the inventor of proof-of-stake, and Brandon Chez, the founder of CoinMarketCap, are The Capital by CMC’s first act.
The two masked men set the tone for CoinMarketCap’s inaugural conference, establishing — in what could be perceived as an old-school crypto move — personal anonymity and technical proficiency as key values at the conference.
Today is day one of a two-day event in the bright and airy Victoria Theatre. Day one’s speakers include Binance’s Changpeng Zhao, better known as “CZ,” one of crypto’s most beloved public figures, Circle’s Jeremy Allaire and Chainlink’s Sergey Nazarov — none of whom will be wearing masks. Several of today’s first speakers represent major crypto exchanges, including Huobi Global, Bithumb and Liquid.
The first major announcement to come from The Capital was from CoinMarketCap itself. Carylyne Chan, CMC’s chief strategy officer, revealed that the website has released a new metric to rank crypto exchanges — liquidity — in addition to ranking by trading volume. The move, first revealed in August, is part of CMC’s effort to fight the issue of inflated trading volumes across the industry.
You can watch the live stream of the conference here.
