CoinMarketCap is an important cryptocurrency website and it recently made a big announcement – the platform intends to discontinue its free public API and instead, will launch a new Professional API.
Unfortunately, the new Pro API will place limits on user requests and data access, depending upon the type of price plan. Essentially – there will no longer be free API (unless one chooses the starter package) and more features require premium payment. There are five tiers: Starters, Hobbyist, Standard, Professional, and Enterprise. The most expensive option, professional, costs $699, while the enterprise indicates that one will need to inquire for pricing.
The current and free API will be offline by December 4, 2018 and the platform encourages users to move to the new Pro API. As the platform states,
“As a part of our mission to continue growing in the cryptocurrency sector with our partners, our professional API will ensure that the CoinMArketcap data that users know and trust can be integrated into every application. Our API comes with a best-in-class developer dashboard that will help every developer – from hobbyist to large-scale cryptocurrency product teams – make the most out of data.”
The cryptocurrency community seems unhappy with the announcement. A reddit user, “/u/Neophyte” removed their five-year data on all coins listed on the CoinMarketCap and made them freely available to all. The platform’s Twitter account has also been abuzz with comments by displeased cryptocurrency hobbyists and enthusiasts.
