CoinMarketCap Hack Still Not Fully Resolved, Users Warn

2025-6-21 09:19

The world’s largest crypto data platform, CoinMarketCap, was hit by a security breach today – and while the team says the issue has been resolved, many users are still seeing signs that something isn’t quite right.

On June 20, 2025, CoinMarketCap’s security team flagged a vulnerability tied to a doodle image that appeared on their homepage. That image secretly triggered a malicious API call, which in turn launched suspicious pop-ups for some users, prompting them to “Verify Wallet” through unsafe links.

The team acted quickly and removed the infected asset. In their official statement, CoinMarketCap said they’ve identified the cause and implemented new protections. “All systems are now fully operational, and CoinMarketCap is safe and secure,” the company stated.

But users aren’t convinced.

Not fixed

At CaptainAltcoin, when logging into our CMC account today, we were still met with prompts to click on unsafe external links. Our browser issued a direct warning: “This site is blocked.” Many users in the comments on Xechoed the same concerns – pointing out that the problem may not be completely cleaned up.

CoinMarketCap’s public update was posted a couple of hours ago, cautioning users not to connect their wallets. “We’re aware that a malicious pop-up prompting users to ‘Verify Wallet’ has appeared on our site. Do NOT connect your wallet,” they wrote, adding that their team is still investigating.

This suggests that while the visible image exploit might have been removed, deeper vulnerabilities or residual scripts could still be active. That’s especially concerning for a platform as widely used and trusted as CoinMarketCap.

Until a more detailed update is shared – and users no longer encounter these warnings – it’s best to stay cautious. Avoid connecting wallets through any pop-up on the site, and double-check links before interacting. For now, the breach serves as a harsh reminder that even the biggest platforms in crypto aren’t immune to security threats.
