Cardano is on course for its ambitious upgrade to the Shelley mainnet, despite the ongoing crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

In a recent development, the Cardano team has mined the test version of the genesis block of Shelley mainnet in a private beta testnet. This test version of the genesis block would make way for a successful first block whenever the Shelley mainnet is launched.

The reports about successfully mining the Genesis block on beta version was shared by Duncan Courts, the chief engineer of Cardano and was later confirmed by the Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson through his official twitter handle.

Cardano’s head tweeted a screenshot of the mined code along with a caption inspired by a Lord of the Rings saying,

Hoskinson also revealed that the beta version of the Genesis block was produced within the “friends and family,” stage, which means the testnet version was not available for the wider developer community and is only accessible to close groups of engineers within the Cardano family.

Shelley mainnet upgrade is one of the most talked-about upgrades on the Cardano blockchain which will be rolled out in phases.

The first phase called ‘closed test' kicked off today with the mining of the genesis block. This will be followed by “hybrid phase,” which will be made available to the community and would allow them to upgrade from the current Byron blockchain to Shelley mainent.

After community on-boarding, the proper mainnet would be shipped which would allow the users to stake their coins on the Shelley mainnet as a medium of collateral and receive staking rewards in return for it.

Prior to mining the genesis block, Cardano foundation also announced Daedalus mainnet wallet which promises improved security and speed for the Cardano network.

The biggest highlight of the wallet is its significantly decreased sync time of 1-hour, which is a big improvement over the previous version, which took anywhere between 9-14 hours to sync with the mainnet. The Daedalus wallet was introduced with a recent reboot of the Byron blockchain.

The reboot of the Byron blockchain also helped the network move away from its existing Serokell code, which would in turn help in the transition towards the Shelley hardfork.

These developments towards the Shelley mainnet is well inclined with the goal proposed by Charles Hoskinson and it is believed that the mainnet won’t suffer from any major setback from its scheduled timeline.
