Schnorr, which is going to be one of the largest Bitcoin code changes ever, is trying to raise enough adoption to actually be used. Now, Blockstream has released some of the test code that will be used on the project. The announcement happened today, February 18, and the technology will use the MuSig technology to test its cryptographic library.

The code was released so that the developers will be able to start using the protocol and tinkering with it in order to find potential bugs. The idea, besides getting some press, was to release the code in order for the community to test it.

According to its developers, Schnorr could bring some major changes to Bitcoin. For instance, it could add privacy to the largest coin in the world and also scalability, which is something that BTC really needs at the moment.

Because of all this, many developers have been eyeing Bitcoin for a long time now and they are ready to use this technology to achieve major new capabilities. A mathematician at Blockstream, Andrew Poelstra, has affirmed that the main goal now is to turn the MuSig into a usable code and that they have merged it with secp256k1-zkp, which is compatible with Bitcoin.

Schnorr has been only a theory for years now. The cryptographers made a lot of progress last year, though, so they ensured that they had what they needed in order to finally open up and let the users test it.

Poelstra has affirmed that the testing was made to address concerns about the code and to implement a new signature scheme so they could actually implement the technology in time without any kind of issue. All of this requires testing is this is their focus now.

The upgrade is seen in a positive light in the community, as some people have already started to think about the technologies that they could build on top of this new protocol. One of the main ideas that drivers enthusiasts of the protocol are to make private lightning transactions.

This would be very useful because it would make the transactions as private as the ones made by high-profile tokens like Monero and Zcash and it would scale Bitcoin at the same time.

Poelstra, which is leading the project, expects that the code could be used in the mainstream Bitcoin core projects in the future as he deems the technology to be very important for the development of Bitcoin.

At the moment, the code of the Schnorr signature can be found on Github and all the community is able to give proper feedback about this new technology while it is still in development.
