They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but for the crypto wallet provider Blockchain, with the blockchain.com domain, copying its business name is not a flattering matter at all. The company just lodged a complaint in a US court against another website accusing it of attempted deception and trying to mislead customers into thinking that the site was “Blockchain.”
Blockchain.com Accuses Blockchain.ioBlockchain, in a blog post, identified the alleged copycat website to be blockchain.io, according to an article on Yahoo Finance. The company said it was prompted to file a complaint because the two sites are so similar that it has created confusion among consumers. The firm further argued that the similarity seems to be deliberate.
For instance, the two companies’ domain names — blockchain.com and blockchain.io — are so similar that it could create brand confusion. In fact, customers have approached Blockchain, asking whether it is about to do an initial coin offering (ICO), which puzzled the company since it has no plans of any financing round at the moment. It turns out that it was blockchain.io that is set to launch an ICO.
Blockchain argued that the two sites also share a similar color scheme. The company also said that their logos are similar and that blockchain.com’s tagline “connecting the world to crypto” was repurposed by blockchain.io by means of a thesaurus to come up with the tagline “your gateway to the internet of value.” As of this writing, however, the company’s blog post detailing its complaint has been removed from the site.
Blockchain.io Is Paymium Rebranded?Blockchain further revealed that Paymium, a now defunct crypto firm, is behind blockchain.io. Blockchain filed the complaint as it fears that its brand may just be used for the upcoming blockchain.io ICO, which is scheduled for Sept. 27. According to the company, the original platform Paymium damaged its reputation when clients of its Instawallet lost their funds because of a 2013 hack.
However, blockchain.io founder Pierre Noizat denied Blockchain’s allegations, saying that the timing of the complaint is “strange.” According to him, Blockchain had six years to raise the issue but decided to file the complaint only at the last minute — six days prior to blockchain.io’s public token sale.
The blockchain.io domain name was registered to Paymium on April 2012, and blockchain.io was already registered as a brand in 2017.
