Farmers are usually thought of as the least tech-friendly group of people in any society. But that perception is changing, thanks to cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology. So far, there has not been a shortage of projects that have tried to bring cryptocurrencies into agriculture. Although the projects have had mixed success, the idea of a universal currency that can be used in the industry is gaining traction.
There are some places in the world like a small town in Russia where a cryptocurrency has become the most common way to pay locally. Russia hasn’t been known to have lenient economic laws, so the fact that a small group of people could pull this off is outstanding.
Helping the Third World Catch UpMany humanitarian organizations have been trying to find ways to help out farmers in the third world so that they could catch up and compete with farmers from across the globe.
One of these organizations is Olam, which has created a platform, the Olam Farmer Information System, to help track every movement and payment along production lines that stretch from Australia all the way through Africa and back. The main idea that this organization has is that with blockchain technology and universal currency, companies or independent investors can feel safe about investing their money in third-world farmers.
For farmers in Cambodia, Ghana and other places, it could mean access to resources they never would have thought possible as the new blockchain technology allows companies to invest in them without the need for a banking institution as the middleman.
Early this year, French supermarket giant Carrefour introduced a blockchain-based system that allows customers to track the chicken they buy all the way to the manufacturing farm. While this system is focused more on customer satisfaction, it is proof that a similar blockchain applied to track purchases and the production of goods is entirely possible.
The Kolion Experiment Is Proof It Can WorkThe cryptocurrency market has seen the birth of coins like AgrolifeCoin, CottonCoin and other Ethereum-based smart contracts like NagriCoin, eHarvestHub, and AgroTech Farm. But most projects fail to really stabilize themselves as a main fixture in the agriculture market.
However, there is one coin, called the Kolion, which was developed by a Russian farmer from the village of Kolionovo 80 miles outside of Moscow. The coin has now replaced the ruble as the most popular way to pay for agricultural goods and services in the region. This brings hope that a much larger scale project could be possible and could help not only to establish the use of cryptocurrencies in the sector but also to provide an opportunity for people who have been historically disenfranchised.
