Bitcoin Surge to 1 Trillion Market Cap

2021-2-23 17:37

The price of bitcoin crossed another major milestone, as the cryptocurrency’s market value surpassed $1 trillion, according to Coindesk.

The digital currency was trading at just under $54,000 per coin on Friday as it hit the new level, and rose above $57,000 by Sunday 21st Feb. The price of bitcoin has now gained about 390% over the past six months. Before the recent surge, the digital asset has never traded above $20,000.

The move has been fuelled in part by increased adoption of bitcoin by major investors and companies. The oldest bank in the United States, the Bank of New York Mellon endorsed bitcoin, Elon Musk’s Tesla converted some of its balance sheet cash into bitcoin earlier this year and said it would start accepting the digital tokens as payment, Uber followed the same path.

Market value is calculated by multiplying the price of bitcoin by the number of coins in circulation. While not a perfect comparison, the $1 trillion market value would make bitcoin’s value greater than all but a handful of the world’s stocks. Tesla, for instance, has a market cap of around $700 billion, while Apple is valued at more than $2 trillion.

What next for bitcoin, if speculations are to be believed it will sky rocket to 1 million $ by 2025. The logic for this is limited supply and circulation of bitcoin and endorsement by billionaires and corporates. Total bitcoin supply was supposed to be 21 million coins and 18.7 million coins already mined and in circulation, balance 2.3 million coins will be mined in next 40 to 60 yrs.

As a technology blockchain is evolving into multiple usage platforms and many institutions are adopting this new platform for better security and speed. This will always give a boon to crypto domain. Alt coins which has stable platform or sustainable model or backed up asset will definitely reap better benefits from this mother coin surge.

Gold is a proven asset and now bitcoin touching gold 1 kg rate brings into discussion the comparatives between the two as investment tool. Time will tell us if bitcoin can be the next Gold.
