Bitcoin Core Developer Shows How to Run BTC Without An Internet Connection

Bitcoin (BTC) has been a very resilient currency during the last few years. It resisted a ban from China and regulations from different countries. Perhaps, the only way to shut Bitcoin down is by switching the internet off. Nevertheless, a Bitcoin developer, Gregory Maxwell, former CTO at Blockstream, said that he used satellite signals to keep receiving Bitcoin blocks.

Although Bitcoin’s reliance on the internet could be a weakness, there are some ways not to rely on it to keep the network working. Mr. Maxwell said that due to some internet outages, he used satellite signals instead to run Bitcoin.

According to him, users do not need to do much to get a space connection and keep one node running in the country. Even if the internet goes down, it is possible to keep connected using satellite signals.

He said that he spent around $200 dollars in two dishes, SWIM power injectors, USB extender cables and more. The greatest difficulty is to find all the parts and making the necessary connection.

Although it is currently possible to have internet connection almost all over the world, there are some regions and zones that might not have access to it. Due to this issue, developers have been trying to find a solution to keep the Bitcoin network running even without internet.

If there is a country that tries to turn off the internet in the region, it might be very problematic for Bitcoin and the whole network. What would happen if a country such as China, with a large number of nodes (around 4% of the total number of nodes), disconnects from the Internet? And what if several countries at the same time disconnect the internet? This would clearly have a very negative impact on the Bitcoin network.

To avoid a big problem, it is necessary just one node connection to keep the network updated. A satellite connection can help several countries to keep running the Bitcoin network even if there are some problems with internet.
