Dutch professional football club Alkmaar Zaanstreek, commonly known as Az Alkmaar, is set to accept Bitcoin (BTC/USD) after entering into a strategic partnership with the crypto trading platform Bitcoin Meester. The team unveiled this news through an announcement on July 1, noting that this partnership will see Bitcoin Meester become its official sponsor. As part of the deal, Az Alkmaar will have to accept some of the sponsorship funds in BTC.

According to the announcement, SPORTFIVE facilitated this deal by connecting Az Alkmaar and Bitcoin Meester. The agreement will last for four years, ending mid-2024, and both parties signed a contract in the AFAS Stadium to commemorate this pioneering move. Allegedly, this partnership is the first of its kind in the Netherlands and it seeks to expose football fans to crypto. Az Alkmaar has vowed to hold the BTC it receives in its balance sheet, seeing as it believes in the potential of BTC.

Commenting on this partnership, Mitchell Zandwijken, Bitcoin Meester’s CEO, said while the company has grown significantly over the past few years, this development will help it expand further. He went on to disclose that Bitcoin Meester has been eyeing the football industry, and the sports sector as a whole, because of its numerous fans. According to him, this partnership with Az Alkmaar is part of the company’s broader strategy to expand its customer base.

Crypto adoption in the football world increases

Az Alkmaar’s Commercial Director, Michael Koster, said the cryptocurrency market has been performing well after attracting a vast user base over the past few years. He added that guidance within the market is key, seeing as some of the new adopters are not familiar with how the sector works. However, he believes that football fans that decide to dabble in crypto will find a responsible guide in Bitcoin Meester. Per Koster, creating a safe environment for new users opens a gateway leading to the mass adoption of cryptocurrencies.

This news as the football industry continues becoming increasingly involved in cryptocurrencies. Before Az Alkmaar, S.L Benfica became the first European football club to accept cryptocurrencies as payment for its merchandise through a partnership with UTRUST. At the time, the team accepted BTC, ETH, and UTRUST token (UTK).

Apart from accepting crypto, multiple football clubs, including Manchester City and AC Milan, have embraced non-fungible tokens in to increase fan engagement.
