Apple is preparing to take on OpenAI’s ChatGPT with its own generative AI, according to a Wednesday report from Bloomberg. Although, so far, there seems to be little unique about the forthcoming product.
The tech giant, which is worth over $3 trillion and richer than many countries, will still struggle to compete, despite all its resources. When ChatGPT launched with its significant first-mover advantage, it fast became the most popular digital application of all time. Users marveled at its ability to replicate human speech and thought.
Apple’s AI No Different From Its CompetitorsAccording to the Bloomberg story, Apple’s own version of ChatGPT essentially replicates it and other generative AIs like Google’s Bard. It has a very simple design, and so far is not designed for public use. In any event, there are also no plans to release it any time soon.
According to sources, Apple has developed its own framework for developing large language models known as “Ajax.” Apple’s Ajax is also built on top of Google’s own machine learning framework, Google Jax, and runs on Google Cloud alongside Apple’s own infrastructure and Amazon’s Amazon Web Services.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has been careful about his company’s public embrace of AI. Even as the iPhone creator falls behind the pack. During a company earnings call on May 4, Cook was cautious about the potential of the new technology.
“I do think it’s very important to be deliberate and thoughtful on how you approach these things,” he said. “There’s a number of issues that need to be sorted … in a number of different places, but the potential is certainly very interesting.”
Despite his guarded comments, Cook has previously admitted to using ChatGPT himself in his work.
UK Planning an AI Summit Later This YearGenerative AIs exploded in popularity with the rise of AI image generators like DALL-E and Midjourney. Although, the AI frenzy kicked into another gear late last year when OpenAI launched ChatGPT.
Since then, governments and technologists have been racing to understand the ethical considerations of such a powerful technology. And what it might mean for the future not only of work, but the human race in general.
The UK is due to host the first global summit on artificial intelligence later this year. The event will host President Joe Biden and other leaders as they attempt to build a common framework for its development.
Time will tell whether leaders can reach anything like consensus on so deeply divisive a topic.
