Amazon Partners with Worldpay: Is e-Commerce Behemoth Getting Closer to Ripple?
Amazon Pay is a popular and widely known payment method in the sphere of online commerce. Of course, one of the reasons is that it is a native method of payment on the leading major e-commerce platform — Amazon.
But it is not the only one explanation. It is also widely used outside of this online shopping platform, a lot of retailers and online merchants all over the world have chosen Amazon Pay to be applied as a payment method.
Amazon and WorldPay: New PartershipBut now it is expected that the opportunities for merchants will be expanded owing to the recently announced partnership of Amazon and Worldpay. This collaboration is a milestone for the entire industry as it makes Worldpay the first acquirer to fully enable Amazon Pay for its merchants.
In the framework of this cooperation, U.S.-based Worldpay merchants will get a possibility to utilize Amazon Pay with a view to enhancing their clients online checkout experience.
According to Amazon Pay Vice President Patrick Gauthier, it’s a serious step forward for their payment service as now it will become available for a much wider pool of merchants.
The initiative to establish this partnership with Worldpay reflects Amazon’s desire to make its payment service available for a bigger number of large merchants as a further step of its evolution. Such a desire has become a serious ground to develop relations with a major acquirer.
Speaking about their strategy, Gauthier noted:
“We started to really think about how [we] not only simplify integration and onboarding, but [how to] better manage operations on an ongoing basis. We decided the best solution for us was to integrate with a large merchant acquirer, as that simplifies a lot of the day-to-day issues around settlement, reconciliation, reporting and dispute management.”
Gauthier also explained that this move will be also beneficial for merchants as Amazon Pay will facilitate for them their interaction with buyers and added that this partnership is to become a starting point for further innovations in the sphere.
Amazon and RippleLet us also remind that just a couple of days ago Coinspeaker reported that U.S. fintech Fidelity National Information Services Inc. (FIS) had acquired Worldpay. What does it mean for both of them and for Amazon if it is now a partner of Worldpay?
For FIS this acquisition means an opportunity to expand its activities in digital payments. As for Worldpay, it is a new opportunity to expand into new markets and enhance its competitiveness.
But in this very context it’s also worth mentioning that FIS that has bought Worldpay is a partner of Ripple. Given all these facts we can conclude that the partnership of Amazon and Worldpay is an indirect step of Amazon towards Ripple.
Nevertheless, it’s not the first indirect sign of Amazon’s getting closer to Ripple. Earlier, it has become known that Amazon is collaborating with Axis, an Indian bank that is a participant of Ripple’s network.
Amazon and Axis were working together to ensure functioning of a new payment app for making purchases on Amazon. XRP that is used in Ripple’s products was also applied in this very case. So, we can say that XRP was used for the needs of Amazon.
Though there is still no direct cooperation of Amazon and Ripple, there are a lot of reasons to suppose that it may happen in the future.
