Cody Wilson, the founder of Texas-based Defense Distributed, is now a renowned name in crypto circles, as well as in national media. After publishing printable 3D gun design files, he came under fire and was universally loathed and even faced an injunction. This Monday, a federal judge in Seattle upheld the emergency injunction that prevented him from publishing further files.
The decision was issued by Judge Robert Lasnick of the Western District in Washington State, who stated that the design files are a threat to public safety and could interfere with the law enforcement’s ability to enforce gun laws. Wilson, however, isn’t fazed by these legal hurdles.
Becoming the Crypto AnarchistDespite what he is called by the media, Wilson likes to stick to the phrase “crypto anarchist,” suggesting that Bitcoin provides people “freedom of code.” Talking to Matt Aaron, the host of “Humans of Bitcoin” podcast, Wilson called himself the “defense contractors of the people.”
At the end of July, his website DefCad went dark following a temporary federal restraining order. He is facing legal battles in 20 US states as of now. He has obtained a settlement with the US Department of State that allowed him to publish the files. But attorneys general from 19 states and the District of Columbia are keeping him busy in legal battles.
He suggests that people who claim that his plastic, serial-free gun files published five years ago are a threat do not understand the law. He added:
“No one’s even disputing that I can sell you the file or just give it to you.”
Sale of Guns Is Wilson’s Legal RightWilson’s view may be controversial to some, but he claims that selling his blueprints is his legal right, even though his website is blocked. He talked about his sales plans, saying:
“I’m just going to start selling the files on my site instead of letting you download them.”
He even said that the lawsuits filed by the states are only providing a false sense of security to the public and added:
“I’m simply choosing not to give the files to the public yet, and I’ll be doing that starting next week. It’s always been legal to make your own gun.”
He also claimed that the attempts to block him are nothing but an expensive farce.
