A New York-Based Woman Pleads Guilty To Laundering Money In Bitcoin To ISIS Terror Group
On Monday, a young New York-based woman, Zoobia Shahnaz, was found guilty for laundering money in Bitcoin in support of the ISIS, an Islamic terror Group.
According to the Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York, Shahnaz, a 27-year old resident of Brentwood, Long Island, pleaded guilty to the charges of operating a scam and support the ISIS after confessing that she wired over %150,000 to both shell and individual entities fighting for ISIS in Turkey, China, and Pakistan in 2017.
Shahnaz Faces 20 Years In JailShahnaz was also intercepted in 2017 as she was trying to flee to Syria from the U.S. with the motive of joining the terror group. Since December last year, she has remained in the hands of authorities pending hearing and determination of her case.
According to the New York court, Shahnaz faces 20 years in prison for providing material support to a terrorist organization. The court documents reveal that in 2016 she traveled to Jordan with the Syrian American medical Society.
A court filing made by prosecutors last year stated that:
“For two weeks, she assisted in providing medical aid to Syrian refugees in Amman Jordan and in the Zataari Refugee camp, where ISIS exercises significant influence.”
Shanzahn Not New To Scam AllegationsThe bitcoin money laundering scam isn’t the first that Shahnaz has faced. In March 2017, she was allegedly engaged in a scheme that intended to scam Discovery, American Express, TD Bank, and Chase Bank by obtaining six credit cards fraudulently. She used those cards to purchase over $62,703 worth of bitcoin and other digital currencies.
In a court document, prosecutors said that:
“Most of these cryptocurrencies that Shahnaz purchased were then converted to U.S. dollars and transferred into a checking account in the defendant's name.”
Last year, Shahnaz was also accused of conducting online research on ISIS, looking for fighters, financiers, and recruiters associated with the terror group.
