Why Did BWC Organizers Cancel Mcafee’s In-Person Speech?

The notorious and controversial cryptocurrency figure John McAfee has once again made headlines. Bitcoin bull McAfee was scheduled to deliver a live speech at Blockchain World Conference (BWC), however owing to “a number of credible death threats against McAfee,” organizers were compelled to cancel the in-person speech.

The BWC did draw in a large number, all of whom were anticipating McAfee’s in-person speech. However, event organizers asked the security specialist not to show up citing numerous “death threats” against him, that could also risk lives of event attendees. In an exclusive conversation with BTCmanager’s Pratik Makadiya, McAfee revealed the real story behind the case in detail:

“The conference organizers received reliable information from local and State law enforcement that there existed a plot to kidnap me from the auditorium. They also received information from anonymous callers claiming that friends or relatives were planning an assault and wanted to divert it in order to save their friends – fearing it would go badly. For me, this happens all the time.”

The Blockchain World Conference tweeted “Due to a number of credible death threats against McAfee, The BWC team has been forced to request that @officialmcafee live stream his keynote speech at 11 am EST, from a secret secure location. Mr. McAfee’s globally impacting message will not be silenced by the efforts of a few!”

McAfee quickly responded in approval and confirmed a live stream in an “undisclosed location” at the programmed time.

A Most Wanted Crypto Fugitive?

During his live speech, McAfee revealed that this is not the first time he has faced death threats. In June 2018, the cybersecurity pioneer was briefly hospitalized averring that it was an attempt to “off” him through poisoning.

Although, due to his personality traits there always remains a room for doubt if the allegations or the claim of death threats are true or publicity stunt.

Last month, the McAfee revealed that he had been threatened by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to steer clear of promoting unregistered Initial Coin Offering (ICO) projects. McAfee had also shared a similar episode with BTCmanager:

“When I [was the keynote at] Defcon in 2013, the organizers received so many threats that they hired 25 security people to surround me 24 hours per day while I was in Las Vegas. Even with the 25 guards, there were three attempts to collect me during the four-day conference.”

Seemingly, McAfee can’t stay away from the spotlight, be it his questionable lavish lifestyle or his courage to take on government agencies or his doubtful assertions. Indeed, his 845,000 twitter followers enjoy the drama.
