Map of Zones is a data-driven platform that visualizes the interconnected activity across the interchain, particularly focusing on Inter-Blockchain Communication Protocol (IBC) activity. Its core purpose is to provide a comprehensive, real-time overview of blockchain transactions and connectivity between interchain-based chains and zones, offering insights into the volume and frequency of cross-chain transfers. They saw the need to track IBC packets and flows between chains and, in 2020, when Game of Zones was started as the de facto testnet and stress test for IBC, Map of Zones began visualizing the transfers before tracking the first mainnet IBC transactions in 2021.
How Map of Zones WorksOn Map of Zones, there is one so-called “watcher process” per tracked chain. These processes parse the chain data on a block-by-block basis and check for IBC-related transactions, mapping out a complete code base of all the connected IBC-enabled chains. After the data is parsed and ingested, it goes through multiple stages of data aggregation to calculate various metrics such as the volume in and out of a specific zone.

If a user wants to find out where most of the outflows of a chain are going, for example, they can go to the ‘peers’ page and see a detailed overview of the flows.
Map of Zones displays the zones and their connections in a very interactive and innovative way, alongside detailed infrastructure insights, user activity tracking, chain token metrics, and interchain asset metrics for over 90 chains in the interchain ecosystem.
How New Zones Are ListedAdding a new chain (zone) to Map of Zones requires some coding by the MoZ team. Each chain has its own specific watcher process which is able to decode the transactions on the chain with its own specific codecs and libraries. Since some chains use different versions of Cosmos SDK and IBC-go these processes are different and encapsulated. Besides this process, other specific information is needed from the new chain:
The repository of the chain source codeWorking RPC and REST clientsBranding informationInformation about the token + Coingecko link (where possible)After this information is provided and the chain has had some time to sync its blocks for the first period, it is ready to be listed on the Map of Zones application.
Future Plans and GoalsMap of Zones’ biggest challenge was creating a scalable system to manage many chains. Although each chain requires its own code for checking and parsing the data, the Map of Zones system is extremely scalable and primed to expand into other ecosystems including EVM-based networks, Solana, Polkadot, etc., offering accurate and reliable data. All these ecosystems are connected with various forms of bridges, and the next iteration of Map of Zones will integrate these bridges and show flows and volumes to many new ecosystems.
All this data paired with the Map of Zones user interface will enable users to access detailed statistics and analytics for all chains and ecosystems with a complete cross-chain explorer and data analytics feed using all the data gathered and processed.
