Kitties are irresistibly cute and cuddly, which probably explains why they seem to be taking the Internet by storm. But when somebody is willing to pay $172,000 for one, it is natural for the act to get noticed. More surprisingly still is that this particular feline actually resides in the digital world.
The Most Expensive CryptoKitty EverThe CryptoKitty’s name is Dragon, and she just made history as the world’s most expensive CryptoKitty ever. On Tuesday, Sept. 4, somebody called Rabono, who must be awash with cryptos, was willing to part with 600 ETH (which is around $172,000 at that time) just to be Dragon’s new owner, according to a CNET report.
By now, everyone is wondering what is so special with Dragon, who is also known by her other name CryptoKitty #896775 (yes, she is the 896,775th kitty on the game), for her to cost that much. Her description at the CryptoKitties site seems too ordinary to justify her price.
Yes, she admitted to having bitten someone named Rebecca Black in her younger years but says she no longer does the same. Her pastime is a bit questionable as she finds spying on her neighbors seriously exhilarating, but that tendency could also be easily justified as she just might be inherently curious — she is just a cat after all.
Average Price for a CryptoKitty Is Only $60There seems to be no rational way to justify Dragon’s six-digit purchase price. The average CryptoKitty price is only $60, while its median price is even lower at just $9.
It’s true that the second most expensive CryptoKitty was also purchased for a hefty sum. Back in December 2017, Founder Cat #18 sold for 253ETH, which was worth $110,000 at that time, according to TNW. However, Dragon should be priced lower than #18 since she is already a ninth-generation kitty. Based on the previous trend, early-generation kitties tend to be more expensive.
CryptoKitties declined to comment when asked about the unusually high price, saying that it does not publicly comment on such deals. However, the company offered a few reasons:
“Maybe there was a personal connection the buyer had to the cat or the seller … Maybe they really, really, liked how that CryptoKitty looked.”
