The year 2018 has been very important for Tron Foundation. From leaving the Ethereum blockchain behind to migrating to its own mainnet smoothly and from acquiring businesses to electing Super Representatives, the blockchain has continued to stay in the news throughout the year. Recently, Tron unveiled some news about Project Atlas, a content distribution initiative that relies on BitTorrent and provides better content to millions of users.
Details About Project AtlasIn the first phase of its implementation, BitTorrent will connect all its users to the Tron blockchain. The peer-to-peer content-sharing network currently has over 100 million monthly active users. Tron will use BitTorrent protocol extensions and create an inbuilt token economy using a custom token. This will help in making BitTorrent protocol faster and provide decentralized content distribution service to all the users.
Founder and CEO of Tron Justin Sun talked about the ambitious Project Atlas, saying:
“Project Atlas is the foundation for a new way of content distribution. To start, the product will feature faster downloads, more seeds, no mining, and backward compatibility.”
He also said that the new initiative is designed for today’s world — connected, mobile, and transparent. Sun also mentioned that Tron aims to “eventually empower all content creators and their communities by eliminating the middleman and enabling content creators to distribute directly to users.”
How Will BitTorrent Work With Tokens? As Project Atlas starts being implemented on the BitTorrent network, users will be able to spend tokens to incentivize people who use faster networks to seed torrents for a longer time. This will help in improving the longevity of swarm and ensuring that download speeds remain high. The more bandwidth that seeders provide, the more tokens they will be able to earn for helping the entire community. There will be no mining-related issues as TRX tokens use a Delegated Proof of Stake system. Users will exchange tokens based on resources dedicated by the seeders and not on mining.
The BitTorrent protocol extension that facilitates this feature will be backward compatible, letting all torrent clients migrate seamlessly. Users running torrent clients other than BitTorrent or uTorrent will also be able to use it. The product will be offered for free.
