The National Science Institute (The Geek Group) Closes Offices 10 Days After Feds Seize His Assets

The federal government recently found it necessary to investigate the National Science Institute, a tech organization that was located in Grand Rapids, Michigan. On December 21st, a search warrant was served to the campus on Leonard Street, which brought in the IRS and Homeland Security Investigations. During the investigation, a nearby business noted that the investigators were bringing a substantial number of paper files out with them.

Though the investigation is ongoing, and founder Chris Boden said that there was nothing illegal occurring “to the best of [his] knowledge,” the organization ultimately has shut down. The shutdown happened on Monday, January 7th, which was 10 days after the feds had already finished the search. The decision to close the National Science Institute was announced by Boden, who was also the president of the organization.

Justifying the end of the group, Boden said that they had been experiencing financial difficulties for years. However, he added that the “recent PR hit from being raided by four different Federal agencies while being unable to actually tell people the truth about why, we've finally hit the wall.”

Despite this statement, The Block reports that Boden actually took responsibility for the demise of the company, saying that he was commercially participating in unauthorized cryptocurrency trading. He admitted his wrongdoings via YouTube broadcast on Saturday, adding,

“I did a stupid thing. I made a bad decision, so I’m going to pay for it.”

So far, the charges that will be brought against Boden and/or the company are unknown.

To help with the substantial debt that the organization still has on record, Boden announced that there will be a massive sale. The building has already elicited multiple offers on their sale as well. Boden summarized the end of this era, saying,

“There's so much to do… And not like even on the global scale that we operate. Locally, in our backyard, there's so much to do and I hope somebody picks it up.”

The National Science Institute used to be known as the Geek Group, which focused on tech-science in a nonprofit manner. It had been around since 1994, supplying spaces for individuals to work and even offered low-cost computers to families that needed help.
