The Tezos mainnet was one of the most highly anticipated launches of the year, and the blockchain community kept waiting anxiously for it to go live. Ending the wait, Tezos Foundation announced on Monday, Sept, 17, that the mainnet is now live. It also informed of an upcoming cycle in the network. Meanwhile, the coin was listed on Bitfinex, one of the largest crypto exchanges in the world.

In a blog post, the Foundation noted that the genesis block proposed on June 30 became the seed for the Tezos network. The team regarded the initial network as betanet as it was expected to have “a higher likelihood of experiencing unscheduled downtime along with maintenance and adjustments,” even while being fully operational. However, after testing the network for a few months successfully, the team is happy with its smooth and efficient performance.

Tezos announced in the blog:

“As a result, we now consider the beta period concluded, and while active development still continues, we are pleased to regard the Tezos network as the mainnet.”

During the test, the community engaged actively and added 400 validators (bakers) that are scheduled for an upcoming roll distribution cycle. The community is also involved in improving network understanding and adoption.

Tezos warned that this is a new blockchain technology, and hence it may face some unexpected issues even after adopting the mainnet.

On Monday, Bitfinex announced that it has started trading XTZ (Tezos) coins on its platform against USD and BTC pairs.

However, the listing could not save the currency from a massive price drop. On Sept. 10, the price of Tezos hovered around $1.20 and then quickly gained momentum to $1.75 on Sept. 15. After steadily holding on to $1.67 on Sept. 17, the prices experienced a huge fall to as low as $1.42 on Sept. 18.

CoinMarketCap data suggest that price fell as much as 10 percent in the past 48 hours alone, even as Bitfinex XTZ/USD pair amounted to 20.22 percent of the coin’s daily volume, the second highest after Gate.io. Despite the issues and the relatively new entry into the space, Tezos is the 16th largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, at over $900 million.
