Science and Food Ministries of South Korea to Utilize Blockchain for Tracking Meat Supply Chain

2018-11-22 09:44

Everybody knows that the blockchain technology can be used in the tracking of many different supplies.

Companies around the whole world including tech giants like IBM are already using the technology for things like this. Because of this, it is no surprise that the government of South Korea is now eager to follow this trend and do the same.

It was recently revealed by Yonhap News Agency, the largest news agency in the country, that the government of South Korea, via its ministries of Food and Science, is set to use the blockchain technology to provide customers with more information about the food that they buy in the market.

The Blockchain Pilot Program

The blockchain technology will be used in a pilot program created by the government that will join forces from the Ministry of Science and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs to start the tests. The tests are scheduled to start in December and the official launch of the program is set for January 2019.

However, it should be noted that there might happen any kind of delay in case the ministries decide that the technology is still lacking or that the tests are not successful. It does not look like this is a very big possibility, though, as the project is already in a very advanced phase.

According to the original report made by the local news outlet, the ministries will use the distributed ledger technology to track beef supplies via a supply chain that will provide the customers with more information about their sources of food and they will be able to know more about the state of the meat and track it.

It was also stated that this new platform will use the blockchain as a way to store related information and certificates that are immutable (as the blockchain always is), which will enhance greatly the efficiency of the whole process and its credibility.

Blockchain For Agriculture And Tracking Is Very Common Worldwide

It is fair to state that using the blockchain in agriculture and for tracking produce is basically one of the most common ways to use, and it probably only loses to its use in the financial industry (with cryptocurrencies and other similar things) and for its use in shipping and logistics, as the immutable distributed ledger is also very good for this.

The largest gtain exporter in Australia, CBH Group, has decided to partner up with a local crypto startup, for instance, to use the blockchain technology in the shipment and tracking of its main products.

Another example is that the four largest agriculture companies in the world, Cargill Inc, Louis Dreyfus Co, Archer Daniels Midland Co. and Bunge Ltd have all started to use a mix of the blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in order to reduce the costs of trading and to make it even easier to trade with more efficiency and transparency in the country.
