Razer is looking to expand into web3 via a new gaming incubator under its venture capital arm called zVentures Web3 Incubator (ZW3I), according to an April 11 press release.
The gaming hardware maker said the goal of the incubator is to help developers create next-gen blockchain games and projects. It added that current offerings in terms of web3 games were severely lacking.
Razer said that blockchain technology enables new features in games but the fundamental principles behind what makes a game good are the same regardless of whether a game is web2 or web3. It added that good games focus on immersive and engaging gameplay.
“Many blockchain games on the market today focus primarily on utilizing blockchain technology rather than creating an engaging and enjoyable gameplay experience, resulting in a lack of player interest and retention.”
QualityRazer said ZW3I will prioritize quality above all when choosing projects and will favor developers and publishers that are “focused on the gameplay experience.”
It added that developers who have a “proven track record” of making great web2 games will also be favored when selecting finalists among the submissions.
Projects that are selected will be given access to Razer’s marketing and partnership programs, as well as its entire ecosystem of hardware and software services.
‘Fun’ factorRazer said it will look out for four main factors during the selection process.
The first is the “fun” factor of the game and the project’s overall cohesion in terms of design, art and web3 elements.
The second is the overall quality of the project and whether it’s a unique concept or not. This includes determining the safety and security of the project.
The third factor is whether the project has a “sound roadmap” and assessing the investors involved.
The final thing Razer intends to look out for is the experience of the team behind any given project and their track record. Additionally, it will assess whether the team is committed to completing the project or not before making a decision.
