Working as a core developer within Ethereum is certainly no easy task: it requires an intricate knowledge of its mechanisms, as well as a steadfast approach in how to push it forward. While this title is a daunting one for many, for the likes of Lane Rettig, it's fast become his natural habitat.

Throughout his de-facto tenure of 15 months, he is showing a natural proclivity within the Ethereum ecosystem. So what is it that sets Rettig apart from other core developers in the space?

The answer is glaringly simple: he's proven more than willing to engage with members of the public about the project. This includes members of the mainstream media, often going out of his way to instruct and guide newcomers through the world of the blockchain.

Fortunately, a line of conversation includes the question of what is to become of Ethereum in the future? One of the issues that have taken center stage for the Ethereum community has been scalability for a long time. It's for this reason, among others, that there has been continued pressure within the community in order to resolve it.

Almost in tandem with it is the fact that Ethereum is making a concerted effort to move away from its Virtual Machine which is currently used in order to allow smart contracts to interact with each other. The reason for the transition, according to Lane Rettig, is that Ethereum will be moving over to a more heavy-duty web development system referred to as ‘Web Assembly'.

This transition is a rather momentous one, considering that Web Assembly is a core component of the long-awaited development of web 3.0, otherwise referred to as ‘WASM.' The gravity of this transition is certainly not lost on Rettig, and it has he and the team thoroughly excited to be responsible for its integration into the Ethereum ecosystem.

“It allows you to create a single computer program, a piece of code that runs anywhere,”he explains.

While developers tend to believe that WASM is a small component of Ethereum when, in fact, it's very much to the contrary.

“It’s already in every web browser in the world. The traditional view is that Ethereum’s like this big thing and wasm is like this little module; like we’re opening up the hood, taking out EVM and putting in ewasm instead,” Rettig. elaborates.

While this is a significant step, the task itself will more than a monumental one, which is fitting considering the monumental scale of WASM. With over one million smart contract codes needing to be transferred over from the Virtual Machine provides one of the more arduous tasks to complete, but Rettig is resolute in his belief that EVM can continue to function alongside its eventual replacement, allowing for a less painful transition.

One of the prospective solutions that may prove useful for this situation may also include another measure for scaling that Ethereum boasts – and that's sharding.

“Each of these shards is like an independent universe. There’s nothing in it, there’s no baggage, no data.”

It's because of this, Rettig suggests, that the process of transition is made far easier due to the fact that there's no need to convert any of the code over.

But what needs to happen long term? For Rettig, it's a simple question to answer, and a straight forward (seeming) solution to provide. He proposes that all aspects of EVM be placed onto a smart contract and transferred across to the WASM. According to him, the same is possible for transferring things across to the Virtual Machine from WASM.

Loneliness is an interesting motivating force, and for Lane Rettig, it's what compelled him to dive head first into coding. Becoming so proficient at it that he began his own internet company at age 14. From here, he managed to attend and become a top student in computer science at the University of California Berkeley.
