Popular web browser Opera has added a built-in cryptocurrency wallet functionality to its latest version of Opera for Android. With the appendage, users will no longer have to rely on third-party extensions to make crypto payments.

Crypto Payment Made Simple

In a private beta version for Android, the Norwegian software company Opera is rolling out a browser-based crypto wallet dubbed Opera Crypto. For now, interested users are required to sign up with Opera to access the private beta version. Transactions using the Opera Crypto wallet are secured with Android’s secure system lock. Users are not required to add any extension or application to make payments.

In a press note, Charles Hamel, product lead on Opera Crypto stated:

“Having a Crypto Wallet in the browser brings the cash experience to the world of online payments. Paying with the Crypto Wallet is like sending digital cash straight from your phone, and we’ve just made it easier.”

The built-in wallet functionality is designed to make payments with crypto secure and user-friendly. The wallet is integrated with the United States most popular cryptocurrency exchange, Coinbase, which will facilitate users to purchase goods online directly with crypto.

Opera Opens up to Web 3.0

The Norwegian software company Opera also plans to make decentralized applications (apps) mainstream. For the purpose, the browser is integrated with Ethereum blockchain and supports ETH, ERC-20 tokens and ERC-721 collectibles.

Opera becomes the first browser to support Ethereum Web3 API, allowing developers to communicate with nodes on the Ethereum network.  The software company Opera also envisages introducing more cryptocurrencies if the Opera Crypto is received well by the mass.

In regards to Opera’s advancement to Web 3.0, Hamel said:

“We believe the web of today will be the interface to the decentralized web of tomorrow. By becoming the first major browser to open up to Web 3.0, we would like to contribute to making the internet of the future more accessible. Our hope is that this will accelerate the transition of cryptocurrencies from speculation and investment to being used for actual payments and transactions in our users’ daily lives.”

It is not Opera’s first crypto venture. Earlier this year the company has launched anti-cryptojacking software dubbed NoCoin, for both web and mobile browsers. Additionally, Opera updated its built-in cryptocurrency converter that presently supports price conversions for Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum, and Litecoin.
