Luckily, AI still needs humans to succeed

Humans look at AI in both awe and fear. When I tell folks that I work for a company that builds AI-powered virtual assistants, they frequently ask me if AI is close to becoming sentient. Is it close to becoming human? Are we fast approaching a future where Skynet from the Terminator is real? Will AI become too smart for its own good, like Ava in Ex Machina? In short: no, at least not yet. дальше »

Think about death when you start your next company

Back in high school, my favorite teacher said to me: ”Jonathan. Remember to die a little every day. ” Back then, I thought it was a strange thing to say. Both him and I were and are generally optimistic people, so why even bother thinking about such a sad thing as death? And why did he mention it to me, when I shared my passion for starting new projects with him? Today, I understand what he meant. дальше »

Taylor Swift is watching you watching her

In 2018, face recognition technology (“FRT”) stumbled from childhood into adolescence in commercial applications. It evolved from being used primarily as a gimmick to unlock your phone or retrieve pictures of specific persons within your 60K pictures, to being used in an almost infinite number of commercial applications on a local scale (mostly in China, a frontrunner in FRT). дальше »

Study: Trump’s bravado isn’t an anomaly, it’s the culmination of a century-long political trend

To outsiders, President Trump’s brazen speech and unconventional style may make him seem like an outlier, the sum of leftover parts assembled by a pissed-off populace. But for one group of researchers, Trump’s idiosyncrasies aren’t so much a departure from societal norms as they are a continuation of a trend dating back more than a century. дальше »

Wikipedia co-founder blocked from his Wikipedia account [Update: False alarm!]

Update: Turns out it was a simple misunderstanding. Larry Sanger told TNW he accidentally logged in with the wrong username of and older account. Wikipedia spokesperson said the older account had been inactive for some time (about 10 years) and was blocked by volunteer administrators after showing signs of being compromised. дальше »

High Cost Slows Down Bitcoin ATM Growth in Africa

There are more than 4,000 bitcoin automated teller machines (ATMs) in the world, but only just about 10 (or 0.2 percent) of these are in Africa. In a continent widely touted as the next big growth region for cryptocurrency, could it be that the story of Africa’s growth isn’t as real as many “Africa rising” […] The post High Cost Slows Down Bitcoin ATM Growth in Africa appeared first on Bitcoin News. дальше »

Using social media to measure air pollution’s psychological toll

People are less happy on days when the air is more polluted, according to an analysis of 210 million posts on the Chinese social media site Sina Weibo. Researchers have suspected air pollution takes a psychological toll generally, and dirty air due to industrialization, coal burning, and motor vehicles has become a drag on well-being for Chinese city dwellers. дальше »

OpenAI’s new language bot is scary good at predicting text – perhaps too good

California-based nonprofit artificial intelligence lab OpenAI has cautiously revealed the capabilities of its latest AI, which it’s calling GPT-2. The system can generate surprisingly convincing text to follow any sample you throw at it, like a news article headline, or the opening paragraph of a fictional tale, or a prompt for an essay on a specific topic. дальше »

The new period emoji is a first step in ending period shame

Emoji has become a universal language of its own, but up until now there wasn’t one for people to say “I’m on my period” — and that’s more important than you might think. This bloody brilliant news came earlier this month when the Unicode Consortium (the official body that manages emoji worldwide) confirmed in a blogpost that they had approved 59 new emoji designs, including a “drop of blood” that will be added to our emoji catalog in spring this year after more than 55,000 people voted for it. дальше »

How I became pen pals with the kid who stole my iPhone

I’d always wanted to go to India. So I was pretty outraged when, in 2011, my iPhone went without me. I think it’s only fair to place around 5 percent of the blame on my friend Blair. A group of us were in a London wine bar pretending to be grown-ups, searching for more sophisticated ways to say “second-least-expensive bottle” while tossing around wine terms we’d heard in a semi-ironic attempt to impress our waiter. дальше »

Let’s not accidentally build depressed robots

In trying to keep up with the never-ending deluge of news about the forthcoming AI takeover of human society, a talk at a recent conference made me pause.  For a moment, instead of having to consider whether the intelligent robots would liberate us or kill us (it’s only ever one of those two options, I find), I took a moment to worry about the machines themselves. дальше »
