The developers of the crypto wallet warned users that false messages about the token distribution scheduled for the end of the month may contain phishing links.
The MetaMask crypto wallet denied the rumors about the airdrop on March 31. The developers reported that there were many false reports that MetaMask would be distributing tokens at the end of the month.
“These rumors are not only false, but also dangerous. They create opportunities for scammers and phishers (attackers using phishing links to gain access to user data). Be careful with fake websites in the coming days,” the project team warned.
MetaMask is one of the most popular non-custodial (users store passwords themselves) wallets for digital assets. It is used for storing cryptocurrencies and NFT, participating in the DAO and working with DeFi protocols. According to ConsenSys (project developer), in January of this year, the number of active MetaMask users exceeded 30 million.
Fraudulent messages about the airdrop from MetaMask began to appear after in mid-March, the head of ConsenSys, Joe Lubin, announced that MetaMask was planning to create a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) and confirmed plans to issue its own token.
The details and timing of the release of the cryptocurrency have not yet been announced, but the scammers took advantage of this information and created fake accounts in social networks and sites imitating MetaMask resources.
According to the analytical platform DappRadar, against the background of these rumors, activity in MetaMask has more than doubled — the number of daily transactions on March 27 reached 21.4 thousand, and on March 28 — 17.8 thousand, while on average during March it was about 8 thousand.
