The education minister of Malaysia has formed a new consortium of universities that will use the blockchain technology to put the college degrees of everybody in the blockchain and tackle a massive local industry of fake certificates.

e-Scroll will be the name of this new service and it will be created in a joint partnership between the government and six universities form Malaysia. The service will be used to issue new university degrees and to verify existing ones.

As the number of fraud cases involving university degrees has quickly risen in the country as the services that sell these fake documents have multiplied on the internet, this was viewed as a quick solution by the local government.

The idea was first talked about in January, but it took some time for the partnerships and everything that was needed for the service to work well become ready. At the moment, the universities still verify graduates one for one largely via telephone and email and the process is very inefficient and slow.

This new service will be developed by a team from the International Islamic University and it will use the blockchain technology to store certificate data on the NEM blockchain. This way, verification will be done in a few seconds when the QR code printed on the degree is scanned by a machine.

All the new students who are graduating now will use this brand new system and the ministry has affirmed that it will encourage other universities to join the consortium.

They were reported to choose the NEM blockchain because it is very fast and it has unique traceability features and authentication requirements.
