Everybody wants to mine cryptos (or at least that is how it was when prices were high last year) but not a lot of people want to actually pay the energy costs for mining them. This is why we got so many crypto jacking malware around and why now why the South Korean police have arrested a 22-year-old student who used computers of high college to mine cryptos.

The student, which used the computers to mine Monero (XMR) and Bitcoin (BTC), has used the computers of the local institution in order to run a crypto mining software without telling anyone in the school.

According to the reports, the student used 30 computers and the Honeyminer program. He actually was able to mine tokens during most of January this year. All the computers were from the same room, which he had easy access to.

After the man was discovered, a local judge issued an order for his arrest and his operations were shut down. At the moment, the authorities decided not to say the real name of the suspect, but he already went to that college for five years and he was expelled last year.

This has prompted him to decide that he would hide mining software at the school and start to make some money, perhaps as revenge. According to reports, this happened in the Korean city of Ulsan.

No reports were made on how much money was made via the mining or if any of the computers received any kind of damage.

Unfortunately, illegal mining, especially of Monero, is getting more and more common. While the Korean student might have been a more “harmless” version of this problem, some hackers are reported to use crypto jacking software to hack millions of victims and turn their computers into mining rigs.

Monero is their coin of choice most of the time as they are focused on getting the kind of token that cannot be tracked, so they can use it for other illegal activities without being discovered.
