IBM Blockchain Unleashes New Yellow Pages of Blockchain Networks for Visibility

2018-9-14 05:50

On September 13, Jerry Cuomo, Vice President of Blockchain Technologies at IBM, announced that IBM joined the HACERA Unbounded Registry as founding member.

In a blog post he told the story about the Yellow Pages and how it became famous over the years. Additionally, he explained the impact they had in the entire economy and world.

Back in 1830, the first Yellow Pages was released as a directory of business for those interested in specific companies or shops. This was very important for commerce at that time and had a profound impact on the industrial revolution.

It was possible to use the Yellow Pages and find any business on the map. Merchants could use it to include their business and become visible for the whole community and world.

The same happened in 1990s when ICANN became coordinator of different directories such as the Domain Name System (DNS), very important to launch the world wide web and the internet.

HACERA aims to list new applications, blockchain platforms and companies that are working with distributed ledger technology (DLT). The blockchain space as grown exponentially in the last years and companies want to be known.

With the Unbounded Registry, built on blockchain technology, there will be a decentralized means to register, look up and transact across different blockchain solutions. The registry has been built with the intention to interoperate with all the popular distributed ledger technologies. That includes The Linux Foundation’s Hyperledger Fabric, Hyperledger Sawtooth, and many others such as the Stellar Network.

Most of the private networks operating nowadays are unlisted. Unbounded allows these solutions to be publicly visible.

IBM commented on the matter:

“Since IBM began our blockchain journey, we have been committed to the development and use of open technologies. We realized from the start that you cannot do blockchain on your own; you need a vibrant community and ecosystem of like-minded innovators who share the vision of helping to transform the way companies conduct business in the global economy.”

Both IBM and HACERA have been working with distributed ledger technology since a very long time. Indeed, HACERA was one of the first members to join the blockchain system created by IBM.

Some of the most important features of the Unbounded Registry are related to naming for networks, discoverability of networks and applications, a catalogue of domain-specific functions and services; and an independent, open and shared blockchain platform.

In this way, IBM and HACERA are thinking about a future in which companies and consumers would be able to discover each other in a very easy and secure way.
