Gaming Giant Atari Doubles Down on Ethereum, Joins Decentraland

One of the world’s biggest gaming companies is joining Decentraland. Atari classics will be supported on the popular Ethereum app.

Atari Joins The Metaverse

Atari, the pioneering game developer who laid the foundations for early video game culture, moves into Web3.

The American company is collaborating with Decentraland, a popular virtual gaming world that runs on Ethereum. Decentraland hinted at the news earlier today, sharing a digital artwork with the Decentraland and Atari logos.

In a private conversation with Crypto Briefing, Decentraland’s community and events manager Sam Hamilton shared full details of the partnership. “Atari is an iconic brand that fits really well into [Decentraland],” he said. Adding:

“The games are easily portable and it inspires the ‘Ready Player One’ generation, so it was a no-brainer to work with them. They also have classic games that can be revitalised for a new generation”

Atari will be taking over a large estate of the Decentraland metaverse. In it, gamers will be able to experience Atari’s catalog of retro arcade games, including Pong, Break-Out!, Asteroids, Missile Command, and Centipede, among others.

Additionally, there’ll also be space for new community-created games as part of a “Game Jam.”

Decentraland avatars will be able to wear officially licensed Atari merchandise, available via the Decentraland Marketplace.

Classic Gaming in Ethereum

The Atari token, the gaming titan’s cryptocurrency launched last year, will also be used in the game.

The company announced the launch of its own token in November. It’s an ERC-20 token, which means that it runs on Ethereum.

As such, it will easily be compatible with Decentraland.

The partnership is the second move in a few months, suggesting that Atari is betting big on blockchain, specifically Ethereum.

Adding to the news of musicians and major sports teams launching social tokens and increasing hype surrounding the NFT space, the Decentraland and Atari partnership is another piece of news that shows Ethereum is growing beyond DeFi.

The collaboration will launch next month.
