The popular online video game Fortnite is helping to drive cryptocurrency adoption, as its merchandise store has now started accepting crypto payments.
However, the option is limited to Monero (XMR) – a leading privacy coin.
Fortnite Chooses Monero (XMR) ExclusivelyOn January 1, Fortnite announced that its new apparel collection is up for grabs but did not mention digital assets in the Tweet.
A few hours later, Riccardio Spagni, a noted crypto community member tweeted:
“Too cool: the Fortnite merch store (http://merch.fortnite.com ) lets you pay in Monero, so now you can purchase that sweet Durrr Burger onesie without your friends / family / coworkers judging you.”
The news was also confirmed on the Monero subreddit and cryptocurrency subreddit in posts with screenshots from the Fortnite website showing the Monero payment option.
The Monero payments will be facilitated by GloBee.
Monero’s ConfirmationReddit user “fluffyponyza,” who is also a member of the XMR Core Team (Spagni), commented on one of the Reddit posts, writing:
“This is yet another part of the effort of Project Coral Reef, which was a merchant acquisition effort that was half-funded by the Monero community and half-funded by GloBee.”
The Monero community was fired up by the news of being able to pay for their game merchandise using the privacy coins.
However, some Twitter users also raised questions about the absence of other popular cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum.
Spagni answered them in subsequent tweets, stating that the lack of privacy with Bitcoin is a reason why.
Interestingly, options like Visa and Mastercard, which are accepted by the Fortnite store are not privacy-friendly. However, the store wants to offer its customers a payment option that is privacy preserving.
Users who want to purchase from Fortnite’s store with Bitcoin, Ethereum or other cryptocurrencies could use exchanges like ShapeShift to quickly convert their coins into XMR and pay.
