Ethereum Messaging App Status Launches New Tap-to-Pay Crypto Hardware Wallet

The messaging application and mobile browser Status launched its cryptocurrency hardware wallet called Keycard. The wallet is open-source and it will be distributed to crypto developers for free. Later, it will be available to be purchased for $29 each.

During a conversation with CoinDesk, the lead of the Status project, Guy-Louis Grau, mentioned that the wallet has the same size and shape as a Visa card. Keycard is contactless and it works with users’ mobile crypto wallet. In order to sign transactions, it is just necessary to tap the Keycard on a mobile device.

The Keycard can be used with different cryptocurrencies, including Litecoin (LTC), Bitcoin (BTC), XRP or Bitcoin Cash (BCH) among others. It also offers support to all ERC-20 tokens and Ethereum (ETH).

The company will be sending the first batch of these cards as soon as in March. However, they will not be targeting users in this stage.

On the mater, Grau commented:

“We’re not announcing a full end customer product with Keycard. We’re releasing a tool actually. That’s the way it should be seen. At this stage, it’s a tool for third-party blockchain projects that want to secure their application with a cost-effective hardware wallet.”

Additionally, he mentioned that the integration of Keycard into Status will be released during this year. So as to reduce the entry barrier for users and other projects, the Keycard API runs on top of common, standardized technology that has been in the market for more than 15 years.

At the same time, he explained that the security of a hardware wallet is linked with its openness. This would allow anyone to check the software and control that everything works fine. Users can now get the Keycard through the official site but only developers on GitHub can receive the card next month.
