Last Friday, Justin Drake, a researcher at the Ethereum Foundation, said that Sharding will be implemented in 2020. This is a long-awaited network scraping solution for Ethereum’s network.

Drake and co-creator Vitalik Buterin have been discussing scale-up solutions for the project's future. They have been outlining each of the goals and specific functions of the upcoming new features within the network thanks to Sharding. With regard to escalation, transaction fees are highly dependent on supply and demand.

More and more users are sending transactions and want each one of these transactions to enter the Ethereum (ETH) blockchain. Now that blockchain is becoming more and more popular, people are becoming more interested in using it and exploiting the benefits of Ethereum. But now, with so much demand, this means that users basically have to compete for these transactions to be included in the blocks.

The Ethereum network may soon be implementing numerous features that will significantly help with scaling, but it will take patience to get there. At the moment there are two current priorities for the network: Casper, the proof-of-stake (PoS) fork; and Sharding, the scaling solution designed to enable blockchain to accept more users and transactions without congestion or slowing down.

Initially, Casper and Sharding were separate objectives from the roadmap for the separately planned project. As such, Casper must provide a new superpower to the blockchains and be able to reduce the cost of consensus. Now both Casper and Sharding are combining into one design because they share a common infrastructure. They also add beneficial effects to the network by being implemented together.

“With sharding you have all these different shards and they’re like parallel universes, pretty disconnected from each other and so you want to wait for the shards to be able to communicate with each other and we do that by what we call cross-links or checkpoints.” Drake said.

Drake reiterates that Casper's integration with Sharding now strengthens the checkpoints, which allow for greater security and scalability to the project from a single design.

The Foundation has decided to call this the new “Ethereum 2.0”. And they describe it as the most ambitious project that is likely to take place over several years despite being a unique, yet complex, design.

Casper is expected to be the first solution to be implemented. Being the tentative date for its launch in 2019. This solution plan of the Ethereum Foundation has been divided into two major phases. The first phase is the data layer, so a consensus will be reached as to what data is in the shards. And phase two is all about the state, giving meaning to that data and the notion of transactions. These phases would be expected in 2020 and 2021.
