Coinbase, in a recent blog post, suggested that students are moving toward blockchain and cryptocurrencies at an increasing rate. The report was prepared with the help of its partner, Qriously, which surveyed 675 students in the US and reviewed courses at 50 international universities. It also interviewed students and professors about the changing dynamics of this industry. Coinbase claims that at least 42 percent of the leading 50 universities of the world now offer at least one course in cryptocurrency or blockchain.
Report Reveals Educational TrendsPer the report, there is a growing awareness among universities and students of the rising importance of cryptocurrencies and blockchains. Students from a range of majors are now interested in blockchain courses, which is driving institutes to introduce these courses.
Giving the example of New York University Stern School of Business, where the chair of finance department David Yermack started a blockchain course, Coinbase makes its case more convincing. When Yermack first started the course in 2014, only 35 students signed up. In 2018, the number has gone up to 230. He now believes that the class equips students with the knowledge and skills they will need once they get out in the job market.
The largest crypto exchange in the US further suggests that blockchain is making universities consider its serious academic potential, resulting in course inclusion in finance and anthropology, not only from computer science.
Exploiting the Blockchain PotentialThe figures in the report present a curious case of blockchain’s potential. Nearly half of all social science majors have expressed interest in crypto classes. Dawn Song, computer science professor at the University of California, Berkeley, commented on this trend, saying:
“Blockchain combines theory and practice and can lead to fundamental breakthroughs in many research areas. It can have really profound and broad-scale impacts on society in many different industries.”
At least 22 percent of the top 50 universities in the world offer more than one course on blockchain or cryptocurrency. Moreover, 70 percent of universities offer at least one crypto-related foundational class.
Courses are more prominent in the US, where 5 of 18 international universities offer distributed ledger technology and cryptocurrency classes. Prominent American universities like John Hopkins, Cornell and Princeton are leading the pack. The report also talks about Udemy, Coursera, Udacity and edX, which are offering online courses for learners.
