Phillip Shoemaker, Former Apple Exec, Becomes Identity.com’s Executive Director

Phillip Shoemaker has been with Apple for years as an executive for the company. Serving as a Senior Director, his LinkedIn profile shows that he “designed and implemented App Store submissions volume predictions, achieving 95% accuracy on incoming volumes,” among many other roles.

Building up multiple teams in his time from 2009 to 2016, it seems that the work has helped him to best prepare for his new position – executive director at Identity.com.

Jonathan Smith, the CTO and co-founder of Civic made the announcement of his hiring on Thursday, saying,

“Phillip’s knowledge of blockchain and expertise building internal infrastructure will guide Identity.com through a key time of deployment and growth.”

In his own statement, Shoemaker commented,

“Identity is the biggest unsolved problem of our society, and blockchain technology has the potential to completely revolutionize how we prove and verify identity. Enabling a trusted, open-source identity ecosystem, where anyone can contribute or participate, is a key part of making digital identity accessible and functional in our modern world.”

On his LinkedIn profile, he reposted the announcement from CoinDesk, saying that his role will be to “help create a trusted, low cost, worldwide identity ecosystem.”

A company named Inflection was responsible for selling the Identity.com domain in July, which was ultimately purchased by Civic. Even though there was no price for the purchase listed, Vinny Lingham, co-founder and CEO for Civic, called the purchase “opportunistic,” at the time, saying that they “lucked out.”

To help with the creation of the decentralized infrastructure, the firm decided to hold an initial coin offering last year. As a result, there was $33 million raised, which will go toward the progress of the infrastructure, including the option of third parties to log testimonies about individuals on the website.
