Cheapair Warns Customers About Bitcoin Scams

The famous travel website CheapAir.com is warning its users about a Bitcoin scams that demand over $10,000 dollars in Bitcoin (BTC). CheapAir is one of the most important websites for users to buy using virtual currencies. It is possible to pay for plane tickets and hotels in many different countries. And indeed, the company was one of the first to accept Bitcoin back in 2013.

Back in 2017, with the bull market in December, there was an unprecedented increase in sales with the famous virtual currency. However, the team managing the social media accounts was contacted by scammers that were requesting for cryptocurrencies.

The information has been released by CheapAir in a blog post on August 28. In the article, they explain what happened and the fact that the fraudsters demanded for a Bitcoin ransom.

According to the blog post, the scammers threatened the company to damage CheapAir’s relationship with clients, followers and customers. As per the release, fraudsters were going to conduct a social media smear campaign. In order to stop the malicious plan of the fraudsters, the company should have to pay $10,000 dollars in Bitcoin. But of course, the company did not pay for the ransom.

Additionally, the company said that the scammers threatened CheapAir with publishing bad comments about the firm in specialized sites such as Trustpilot. Of course, CheapAir decided to release this information in order to warn users in case they see any strange social media activity related to Cheap Air.

CheapAir has supported virtual currencies even during the last bear market. Some other companies decided to stop accepting cryptocurrencies. For example, CheapAir was using Coinbase and its merchant platform that was shut down at the beginning of the year. Immediately after, it decided to move to BTCPay for processing payments.

BTCPay is not one of the most important companies in the market to process payments, but CheapAir said that now they have more control over the processing experience. In the future, the company wants to accept Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Dash, and Litecoin (LTC).

The company mentioned about the future:

“We’ll keep you updated as needed but, rest assured, regardless of what you see on social media, it will be business as usual here. That includes doing everything we can to make it easier to plan trips, and to be here for you if you need any help along the way.”

This is not the first time that we see scammers that are trying to steal funds from users. Several times we wrote at BitcoinExchangeGuide about different situations targeting cryptocurrency users.

For example, some weeks ago, we revealed that a group of scammers sent letters that threatened to reveal secrets about their lives. The only way to avoid that was to pay a ransom in Bitcoin.
