Coinbase is taking steps to make worldwide adoption of cryptocurrencies easier. Starting August 2, the exchange will start rolling out support for the British pound (GBP) for its customers based in the UK. Zeeshan Feroz, Coinbase UK CEO, announced the news in a Medium post on Thursday. Support for GBP will be available for Coinbase individual/retail customers, Coinbase Pro active traders, and Coinbase Prime institutional traders.

With the new currency support for British customers, payments and deposits in their Coinbase accounts will become easier. To date, British users have to convert their currencies into euros and then into pound sterling. The process is completed via international bank transfers, which take several days. With direct GBP support, the processing time is shorter, helping improve transaction times in buying and selling digital currencies.

According to Feroz, GBP support will help users get “almost immediate transfers,” which is convenient for Coinbase Pro and Coinbase Prime users.

Feroz wrote:

“We’ve worked hard over the last few months to add GBP support for Coinbase customers across several of our product offerings in the UK. We’ve also taken major strides towards our goal of making Coinbase the most trusted and compliant brand in the space.”

He noted that the company has worked hard to obtain an e-money license for all its fiat operations. And the license was approved by UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in March this year. The users’ fiat deposits are now segregated from the company’s own funds, which are maintained in separate bank accounts. This regulatory check will help protect client funds in case things go awry at Coinbase. However, this doesn’t mean that the users’ deposits are protected by the FCA like in the case of a full banking license.

Support for Faster Payment Scheme has also been added, making it the first crypto exchange to support this. In the meantime, Coinbase has also become the first crypto exchange to open a bank account with a major UK bank.

Support for Coinbase, Coinbase Pro and Coinbase Prime GBP is now live for the platform’s existing customers.
