Blackberry Releases Crypto Mining & CryptoJacking Detection Software with Intel

2020-6-20 22:05

Blackberry, a once-popular mobile-manufacturer, has partnered with Intel to launch “BlackBerry Optics v2.5.1100”, a crypto-mining and crypto-jacking detection software for Intel made computers.

The “BlackBerry Optics v2.5.1100” would make use of BlackBerry's Optics Context Analysis Engine, also known as CAE. This software would also incorporate Intel’s Threat Detection Technology to offer enterprises with advanced cryptojacking malware detection software.

The software has been developed in a way that it does not have any significant impact on the processor, it can be easily used to detect the growing nuisance of crypto-jacking which has become an increasing concern of enterprises in recent years.

Stephanie Hallford, Intel’s vice president of the client computing group and general manager of business client platforms, commented on the development of the software solution in partnership with Blackberry and said,

“Building on top of the built-for-business Intel vPro platform, enabled by Intel Hardware Shield, BlackBerry takes advantage of hardware visibility to offer advanced security protection, and we applaud them for this release.”

Crypto Jacking is a method by which scammers insert a crypto mining malware code into the network of an organization, which is quite challenging to detect and then use the computational power to mine cryptocurrencies.

To make people understand the impact of cryptojacking in recent years, Blackberry also sighted a report titled “Verizon 2020 Data Breach Investigations Report,” which claimed that almost 10% of organizations had faced crypto-jacking attacks on their network in 2020. The software is compatible with Windows 10 and can operate with various types of workloads.

Crypto-Jacking a Growing Nuisance

As evident from the Verizon study cited by Balckberry, crypto-jacking has become a growing nuisance, especially for enterprises in the past couple of years. Earlier, these crypto-jacking attacks were limited to individual computers and small networks; however, these scammers have realized the benefits of targeting a more prominent player to get a more significant share of the mined cryptocurrency. While cryptojacker's get their hands-on free mined cryptocurrencies, the affected firms incur high electricity costs.

Josh Lemos, Vice President of intelligence and research for BlackBerry – Cylance explained the reasoning behind the growing crypto-jacking attacks. He said that crypto-jacking is one of the most secure ways to siphon cryptocurrency as it is challenging to detect the malware in the first place. Even if the malware is tracked, there is a very low probability of tracing it to the source who infected the system in the first place.

Lemos hoped that the new software solution developed in partnership with Intel would help with curbing the issue and said,

“With our new crypto-jacking detection and response capabilities, we’re looking to make this practice a thing of the past. Providing enterprises and their employees with a turn-key solution that will enable them to thwart crypto-jacking attempts and ensure their software and hardware are used for their intended purposes.”
