Tommy Robinson Receives 20,000 Pounds from Supporters for Jail Release
Tommy Robinson is a preacher who is quite vocal concerning his position against sex offenders and radical Islam. Robinson, who’s birth-name is Stephen Yaxley Lennon, has garnered a great deal of attention in recent months. The English political activist recently pled guilty to contempt charges, thereby leading to his incarceration.
The contempt charges arose due to Robinson’s broadcast of a live Facebook video outside of Leeds Crown Court. Documentation of legal proceedings can bring about legal action, as it did here. Following Tommy Robinson’s arrest, he appealed to his fans for donations. Supporters rallied around Robinson and donated 20,000 pounds, and many did so using Bitcoin.
Transactions made with Bitcoin not only came from within mainland Britain, but from as far as Washington and Istanbul.
Tommy Robinson also implemented his own efforts and successfully appealed the charges he pled guilty to. Lord Chief Justice Lord Burnett held that Robinson’s case must be reheard due to technical issues concerning the initial ruling upon which Robinson was originally incarcerated. In addition to donations, Robinson’s case has also received attention from several high-profile individuals such as Roseanne Barr and U.S. President Donald J. Trump.
According to Heidi Beirich, the deputy director of the Southern Poverty Law Center,
“I’ve never seen anything like this. It’s not typical to have those kinds of political officials advocating on behalf of people who take part it street fights and anti-Muslim rallies. It’s a shock.”
Bitcoin has been used before to fund individual campaigns for justice. However, the main question here is whether this can be described, as some have, as an “individual campaign for justice.” After all, Robinson’s actions are hardly in the interest of justice.
