Kathryn Haun, the first female general partner at renowned venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), is leaving the VC to start a web3-focused investment fund. Haun announced this news via Twitter on December 15, noting that she will leave a16z officially in the coming year. To this end, Haun’s current deal at a16z will be her last.

1/ Today @cdixon and I shared with the @a16z crypto team that I will be launching my own fund focused on crypto and web3 early next year. The current crypto fund will be my last at the firm

— Kathryn Haun (@katie_haun) December 15, 2021

Explaining why she decided to leave Andreessen Horowitz, Haun said her first crypto fund deal alongside Chris Dixon, a general partner at a16z, performed exceptionally, surpassing their expectations by a long shot. She added that the current performance of the crypto market has made it apparent that web3 will transform the internet.

Haun further noted that Dixon, Ali Yahya, Arianna Simpson, and Anthony Albanese would continue leading the a16z crypto team. Although she is leaving the company, Haun said she would continue collaborating with the above general partners because they are like family to her.

She added that she would continue managing the existing a16z crypto portfolio, seeing as she has not relinquished her position as a board partner. Additionally, Haun intends to keep her board seats.

More details about her new venture to come

While details about the new project, including its name, are scarce, Haun said,

This is an exciting new chapter. I’ll share more details about the fund with the community later in the new year. In the meantime, wishing you all a very happy and healthy holiday season!

Reportedly, she intends to become the only general partner at her firm, and a small number of a16z employees will join her company. However, these employees will not include anyone from the Andreessen Horowitz investment team.

The VC itself will be a limited partner in Haun’s firm.  Marc Andreessen, Ben Horowitz, and Dixon will, allegedly, make personal commitments to the crypto fund.

Wishing Haun well on her new endeavour, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong said she is an acclaimed leader in the crypto community and has played a significant role in helping Coinbase grow. He added that founders who are starting projects in crypto would benefit from having her in their corner.

Apart from leading a16z’s investment in Coinbase, Haun also led investments in OpenSea, Celo, Arweave, and Royal.
