It is not new for US political figures to accept payments in cryptocurrencies. However, a new name in the list is Andrew Yang, a second-generation Chinese American and a Democrat bidding his place in the US presidential elections of 2020. According to some report, it was announced that Yang’s campaign would start accepting payments in digital currencies, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and tokens designed on ERC20 standards. The maximum value of a single donation in digital currencies is $2,500.
Creating a Tech-centric CampaignThe 43-year-old entrepreneur is based in New York and started an entrepreneurial fellowship organization — Venture for America. He has also written a book titled “The War on Normal People,” which favors the idea of universal basic income of $1,000 per month for all citizens between ages 18 and 64. The idea is also supported strongly by Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg.
Yang is also a supporter of automation and artificial intelligence and has favored the theory of “human capitalism,” which aims to maximize human well-being while working in a capitalistic economy.
Yang’s presidential campaign is harnessing the power of technology to make the young candidate popular. He regularly streams videos on Twitch and has now started expressing his views on Instagram TV, a long-form video content section of the popular social media app Instagram.
Apart from digital currencies, his campaign also accepts Venmo payments of up to $2,700. Interested donors will be provided with a form to verify their voter qualifications. Once done, they will be provided with a crypto wallet address, where they could make the donations.
Does He Remind You of Someone?Yang is a democratic face who talks about technology and accepts payments in Bitcoin. However, there is a strong voice from the crypto circle that stands for similar things. His name is John McAfee, the popular but controversial antivirus software magnate who has become a cryptocurrency influencer lately and has consistently shown interest in running for president in 2020. He said that he would either run as a Libertarian Party candidate or make his own party.
McAfee wanted to be president in 2016 as well, and he tried to gain candidature from the Libertarian Party. He lost his bid to the candidate Gary Johnson, the then New Mexico governor. This time, he said that he wants to do it for the crypto community.
